Breaking Down Trip Insurance
To insure or not to insure….that is the question!
We know trip insurance became increasingly valuable in people’s minds due once the Covid pandemic arrived. Perceptions and behaviors around travel or trip insurance changed for a lot of people looking to “get away”. The higher the likelihood of an emergency happening or a flight being canceled, the higher the likelihood that travelers will assume something could go wrong. And I think that mentality of saying ‘yes’ to purchasing travel insurance is here to stay. Travelers tend to see its value now more than ever.

At Andean Discovery, we work with a lot of families, some of whom have young children, as well as a lot of retirees and mature travelers. With this in mind, I think travel insurance is even more valuable for these types of travelers, as you have to keep in mind potential conflicts or illnesses that could arise and what’s best for that particular travel group.
Let’s break it down as you consider your options, as not all travel insurance is created equal.
The quest for CFAR insurance — “Cancel for Any Reason”
“Cancel for Any Reason” insurance – This is something we’re hearing requests for from savvy clients. We even recommend a larger insurance plan that’s quite comprehensive. At Andean, we facilitate the insurance policy process here in the U.S. and abroad for travelers in order to ensure the policy is implemented correctly and for their specific needs. We also make sure follow-up is done swiftly and correctly if a claim needs to happen. It’s rare, but crazy things can happen. For example, a client recently fell off a ladder prior to a trip, and thankfully, he had our trip insurance so the client didn’t lose any money.

The big three
We include an overview of travel insurance options early on in the process when we are talking with a prospective client. Here are the three most important categories to pay attention to and consider when making your insurance decisions:
- Cancellation (before you go)
- Emergency medical (during your trip)
- Trip Interruption (if there is an employee strike and flights are canceled so you can’t fly, or an emergency happens, for example)
When the trip deposit is introduced, we start walking clients through the details of these different types of insurance plans and options. In working with multiple clients over the years, we have learned its smart to go over these policies up front as most people will purchase travel insurance and want the opportunity to talk through what options are available.
