Galápagos with My Daughters: Rediscovering Wonder on Land and Sea
As the owner of Andean Discovery, an adventure travel company, I’ve been fortunate to explore some of the most awe-inspiring corners of the world. But nothing compares to traveling with family—especially when it’s been a long time. Recently, I had the chance to travel internationally with my two beautiful teenage daughters for the first time in over six years. And where did we go? Back to one of the most magical places on Earth: the Galápagos Islands.

Our last trip to the Galápagos together was years ago, aboard a small expedition cruise that island-hopped us through this incredible archipelago, before continuing on to Machu Picchu. This time, we experienced the Galápagos differently—on a land-based trip, staying on the islands themselves. Our company offers both types of trips, Galapagos Cruises and Galapagos Land-based trips and having now done both, I can truly appreciate the unique benefits of each.

What made this land-based journey so special was the freedom and flexibility it gave us. Because these trips are privately guided, we could go at our own pace—balancing time by the pool with immersive wildlife encounters. One day we were snorkeling with sea turtles and curious sea lions, the next we were hiking through a misty highland forest alongside giant Galápagos tortoises.

One of the most unforgettable highlights? Taking a puddle-jumper plane from one island to another—a first for us as a family. It was a small, intimate flight, and as we lifted off, the skies suddenly turned dark. We found ourselves flying straight through a rainstorm.

I’ll be honest—it was a little scary. Just when the turbulence had us gripping our seats, we broke through the clouds into brilliant sunshine. It felt symbolic of travel: stepping into the unknown, trusting the journey, and being rewarded with something extraordinary.

As a parent, it was unnerving at first, but then the clouds parted, and we were greeted by clear skies. It’s a reminder that some of the best travel moments come just after we push past our comfort zone.

Traveling internationally with my daughters after so many years was emotional and unforgettable. Watching them take in the Galápagos with fresh eyes—curious, excited, and full of wonder—was a gift. As someone who helps others plan transformative travel experiences, it was a powerful reminder of why I do what I do.

The inter-island speedboat ride, with its gentle rocking, made us feel sleepy, but it was such an efficient way to travel from Isabela Island to Santa Cruz Island.

The Galápagos will always be one of my favorite places to recommend to guests. And now, I can say with confidence: whether you explore by sea or stay on land, it’s a destination that will change the way you see the world—especially when you share it with the people you love most.
