After your morning flight from mainland Ecuador to Baltra Island, you will meet your Naturalist Guide and travel to Santa Cruz Island. This afternoon explore the highlands of Santa Cruz. As you ascend, you will travel through several different vegetation zones and witness the landscape become increasingly lush and green by the minute. Here you’ll have the opportunity to view the islands’ most famous reptile: giant Galapagos tortoises in their wild habitat. Explore an amazing network of lava tubes, underground tunnels formed by hot liquid rock. This afternoon enjoy a guided visit of the Charles Darwin Research Station, where you will learn about current scientific research on the islands and the Station’s mission to ensure the conservation of the environment and biodiversity in the Galapagos Archipelago.

Overnight Superior:AngermeyerWaterfront Inn                                                                   Overnight Standard: Hotel Mainao

Meals:  (B, L)

This morning we hike 45 minutes through a dry coastal forest and white sand beach to Tortuga Bay, a secluded cove surrounded by mangrove forests. Keep your eyes out for shore birds like Whimbrels, Ruddy Turnstones, Great Blue Herons and endemic Lava Gulls. Later this afternoon, board a speedboat for the two-hour journey to Isabela Island. Isabela Island is the largest island in the Galapagos archipelago, over 80 miles from north to south, and the most biologically diverse. It was formed by the joining of six different volcanoes – five of which are still active today – making it one of the most volcanically active places on earth, and the perfect place to continue your Galapagos adventure. Finish the day with a refreshing swim in turquoise waters as the sun sets on the horizon. Dinner on your own.

Overnight Superior: Iguana Crossing
Overnight Standard: Volcano Hotel

This morning transfer 13 miles inland to the highlands of Isabela to Sierra Negra, one of the largest volcano craters in the world, measuring 6 miles in diameter and 1,000 feet deep. Steaming fumaroles and the charcoal-black landscape are proof of its recent eruption and ongoing volcanic activity. Embark on a hike around the crater rim and witness lava remains from the eruption in 2005. Opt to extend your hike and visit Chico Volcano, a neighboring crater with lunar-like landscapes, including various formations of petrified lava. This afternoon opt for a snorkel excursion at Concha de la Perla or relax on your at the beach. Dinner on your own.

Overnight Superior: Iguana Crossing                                                                                                 Overnight Standard: Volcano Hotel

After breakfast, board a small dingy with your guide and travel across the bay to Tintoreras Island. The island is called Tintoreras because it’s a resting place for white-tip reef sharks, Tintoreras in Spanish. On the way, keep your eyes out for Galapagos penguins, which are the smallest species of penguins in the world and endemic to the Galapagos. A short hike allows you to observe one of the largest colonies of marine iguanas in Galapagos, white-tip sharks, sea lions, Sally Lightfoot crabs, and Blue-footed Boobies. Return to the bay for some spectacular snorkeling with sea lions, rays, and many different species of tropical fish. After lunch, explore an area know as the Los Humedales, a series of coastal pools, lagoons, and endemic mangroves that boast an abundance of birds and native plants. Keep your eyes out for herons, black-necked stilts, Galapagos pintails, and be careful for marine iguanas crossing the road. Make your way to the Wall of Tears, the remains of an old penal colony, and learn about the fascinating human history of the Galapagos. Dinner on your own.

Overnight Superior: Iguana Crossing                                                                                                 Overnight Standard: Volcano Hotel

Earl rise and departure by boat for Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island. From here, you will be transferred to the Baltra Island airport in time for your mid-morning flight to Quito or Guayaquil. A light lunch/snack will be served on the flight. Additional lunch and dinner not included. Upon arrival in mainland Ecuador, you will be met by Andean Discovery staff and transferred to your hotel.

Overnight Superior: Wyndham Quito Airport                                                                       Overnight Standard: Rincon de Puembo

Morning transfer to the airport in time for your international flight. (B)

Traveling to the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu was a dream vacation for my wife. After much research we booked our trip through Andean Discovery. We are so glad we did. Everything went smoothly and our personal guides in Ecuador and Peru were wonderful. I would highly recommend Andean Discovery to anyone thinking of taking a similar trip.

My family toured the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu in Peru with Andean Discovery guides and reservations. We had a fabulous adventure! I recommend highly that "superior lodging" be chosen as an option for the best possible room accommodations. The marvelous comfort of the fine hotels Andean booked for us made all the difference.

Thanks to Andean our vacation was a wonderful experience for our entire family of 15 (8 adults and 7 grand kids aged 16 to 9).. The planning for the trip to the Galapagos was well researched; the hotels, guides and itinerary were spot on. They answered our many questions before we departed and there NO disappointments during the vacation. It was the most memorable trip our family has taken.

We traveled with our family of 3 people. Andean did a wonderful job helping us select an itinerary that was able to accommodate our various ages. We had no glitches in a fairly complicated itinerary and everything came off as planned. Our local guide in Quito Johanna was terrific. I can't recommend Sacha Lodge more highly. Our experience in Galapagos on the Coral 1 was magical. While the crew of the Coral 1 could have been more charming and smiled on occasion they were helpful, the food was very good and the rooms were kept clean. I have no reservations in recommending Andean Discovery for your South American Holiday

Damon put together the perfect itinerary for our group of 7 - including grandparents. His knowledge of the region is superb, which is why he is able to create the ultimate trip for your family. From whitewater rafting in Peru to zip-lining in Ecuador, we truly had the trip of a lifetime! I wouldn't go with anyone else!
