The Andes of Ecuador, also known as La Sierra, have been the home to snowcapped volcanoes and colorful Indian cultures for centuries. The highlands are dominated by crater lakes, active volcanoes, grassy highlands, cloud forests, Indian villages, colonial towns and haciendas. History is preserved in this dramatic landscape where the influence of the Spanish colonizers, Los Conquistadores, is still present and stands in marked contrast to the enduring cultural legacies of native Andean people.
Adventures in the highlands of Ecuador typically begin in Quito. We recommend that you enjoy a couple days here to acclimate and explore the old town before venturing into the surrounding highlands.
